Rheumatic diseases are autoimmune or inflammatory diseases. Autoimmunity is a condition in which the body’s immune system mistakes its own healthy tissues as foreign and attacks them i.e normal cells are attacked by the body’s immune system). What should I expect when I see a pediatric rheumatologist?

  • During your first visit pediatric rheumatologist will get a thorough history of your child’s symptoms, along with your family history. A thorough physical examinations will be done. A detailed review of all records will be done. In addition necessary investigations will be ordered. These include
  • Imaging studies (X-ray, MRI, Ultrasound)
  • Laboratory studies (including complete hemogram, renal and liver functions, ESR, CRP and urine tests)
  • Autoimmune tests: ANA, ANCA, serum complements, rheumatoid factor, HLA B27, etc
  • Cardiac screening: ECHO, ECG
  • Skin or muscle biopsy( if required)
